How to Test Your MVP with Real Users
User testing is not about getting compliments. It's about finding what's broken before everyone sees it.
Before You Test
- •Define what success looks like
- •Prepare specific tasks for users
- •Set up screen recording if possible
- •Have a way to take notes quickly
What to Ask Users to Do
- •Sign up without help
- •Complete the core action
- •Find a specific feature
- •Explain what this product does
- •Tell you what they'd pay
Questions That Get Real Answers
- •What did you expect to happen?
- •What was confusing?
- •What would you do next?
- •Would you use this tomorrow?
- •Who else has this problem?
What to Watch For
- •Where they hesitate or pause
- •What they click on first
- •Questions they ask out loud
- •Shortcuts they try to take
- •Features they ignore completely
Feedback to Ignore
- •Feature requests from non-target users
- •Design opinions (unless blocking)
- •Comparisons to unrelated products
- •Anything from friends and family
- •Suggestions that don't solve the core problem
Watch what users do, not what they say. Behavior is truth. Opinions are noise.
